We are two weeks into January, with two more to go. If getting your body clean and healthy is something you want for 2018, or you have a niggling health concern that needs attention, then our seven-day detox is a good way to get started. It’s more substantial than a one-day cleanse, so it will give you more of the boost you’re after but it’s not the full 28 days. We’ve got our first 28 day re-set program for the year happening at the moment and we’ll talk more about how it works next week.

The benefits of regularly detoxing are strong – not only will you remove toxins from your body and prevent chronic disease, you’ll improve your immune system function, slow down premature aging, increase energy, lose weight, improve your skin quality, sharpen mental and emotional clarity and improve the overall quality of your life.

It all starts in the gut

Taking care of your gut, one of the most fundamental, yet overlooked, areas of health is a key focus of our seven-day detoxes.

Hippocrates, who is known as the father of modern medicine, was onto something when he said, ‘all disease begins in the gut’ – more and more research is revealing the links between the digestive system and chronic illness. If your digestive system isn’t working well, it’s difficult for the rest of the body to compensate. Healing your gut, and restoring your agni, or digestive fire, will reverse negative symptoms like fatigue, stubborn weight gain, thinning hair, low libido, irregular periods, gas and bloating, brain fog, aches and pains.

Elimination

On a detox it’s important to cut out the foods that put load on our body to digest. Even with a healthy diet and just small amounts of caffeine and alcohol, there is still an accumulation of chemicals and toxins which cause problems in the body. Here’s what you want to be reducing, or cutting out all together.

Coffee

Most people have a weakness for coffee. Some people can get away with having a few coffees in the week, but when you’re detoxing you should try to cut it out. A stimulant and astringent, coffee provokes all three doshas. It’s also addictive, very drying and it speeds up aging.

Coffee also pulls the reserve energy from the kidneys and adrenals, which is particularly problematic for vata body types (associated with the element of air). The more exhausted you become, the more you’ll depend on coffee to give you a quick pick up.  Our clients who give up coffee when they are detoxing, are really surprised to find they  have more energy than when they actually drank it regularly.

Sugar

Refined sugars are both stale and over-stimulating. They are difficult to digest and increase ama (the undigested foods in the body).

Sugar also aggravates vata, and kapha (earth and water) leading to fluid retention, weight gain, agitation and general dullness. It also weakens the pancreas and the liver, which in turn can aggravate pitta (fire) in the body.

It comes as no surprise that chocolate, fizzy drinks and sweet treats are full of added sugar but there are also piles of hidden sugar in things you might not have thought of, such as salad dressing, ketchup/ sauces and breakfast cereals. You should try to avoid hidden sugars as well.

Alcohol

Alcohol is very heating for the body and will increase pitta and inflammation. The amount of sugar you eat also increases swelling and inflammation.

The good news is, it only takes the liver six weeks to rejuvenate every cell. A detox will give your liver the break it needs.

Wheat based products

You might not be a person who has any digestive issues from eating wheat, but it is still good to give your body a break from wheat products, as often the problem is more about the chemicals that go into our processed bread and wheat products than the wheat itself.

Removing wheat from your diet for a while, and giving your body a rest, allows you time to improve your digestion.

Cheese

In Ayurveda, cheese is one of the main causes for clogging up your digestion. Its damp and heavy nature can clog up the channels of circulation and aggravate chronic disease such as allergies, asthma, arthritis or heart disease.

During a detox cheese is best avoided – particularly hard cheeses.

Meat

Meat is of kapha quality and that means it’s heavy and sweet. While eating meat, your body can’t clear the colon effectively and we now know that meat is linked to chronic disease like cardiovascular, colon cancer and tumours.

The less meat you eat the better chance your body has to digest its food. Meat ferments in the gut and gives the body an environment for bacteria and mucus to build up.
