As a pitta body type, you’ll tend to be the natural born leaders. You love order and structure and taking charge is easy for you. Out of balance you might feel frustrated, and struggle with incompetence, or have angry outbursts. Maybe your hair is prematurely greying, or thinning, or you’re having trouble sleeping and suffering from reflux or headaches.
Pitta, dosha – one of the three Ayurvedic body types, is affiliated with the element of fire. The 5000-year-old ancient practice of Ayurveda works on balancing opposites – if it’s a stinking hot day, the last thing you’ll want to do is sit around a blazing fire. So, if you’re a pitta personality, it’s important to know how to keep cool both in temperature and personality.

For now, let’s look at what it means to be a fiery, passionate pitta and how you can best work with your body type to lead a vital and healthy life.
Natural leaders of the pack, pitta body types have a strong will and drive. You might have trademark bright red hair like famous pitta personalities Nicole Kidman and Julianne Moore. It’s also common to be bald and have thinning hair which is prone to premature, greying when imbalanced.
Your complexion is often copper, with yellowish or reddish tinges – you might have freckles and be prone to sunburn and rashes. It’s common for pitta body types to have hazel, green or light brown eye colours.
Pitta bodies are also often toned, athletic, muscular and medium build – they tend to gain weight evenly. When in balance, you’ll have a face that literally glows with happiness.
Pitta personality have a powerful intellect and intelligence, with a strong ability to concentrate and a lot of drive. You’ll also probably be a good sleeper with a robust sex drive.
When in balance you’ll find it easy to make decisions and feel natural speaking in front of groups because of your sharp-wit and direct way of communicating. Out of balance this can all backfire and you can come across as short tempered and argumentative, even frustrated and irritable.
It’s important to keep your blaze, but not overheat, so it’s wise to dress, and surround yourself, with cool colours such as blues, greens and silvers. And to keep your cool.
Pitta body types tend to have good healthy digestion, which often leads them to believe that they can eat anything. It’s not a good idea for pittas to skip meals – so don’t wait until you’re starving to eat. When imbalanced you will push people out of the way to eat… sound familiar?
The best foods for you will be those that are sweet, bitter and astringent – you’ll also feel better eating the cooler foods like cucumbers, melons, berries and grapes. Zucchini, broccoli, beetroot, rice and egg whites will be good for you too. Dairy can also help reduce the heat of pitta – in particular butter milk, milk, butter and ghee. Grains like wheat, rice, barley and oats are also good for you.
Just be careful not to overeat, or have too much spicy or fermented foods as this can cause fever, rashes and ulcers.
Lifestyle and exercise
The best way to keep pitta body types healthy is finding a good balance between rest and activity – so that’s making sure there’s free time every day to do something for yourself. You’ll also feel better if you can spend a good amount of time out in nature, taking walks in the woods and keeping fresh plants and flowers in your home and office. Walking on the green grass for five minutes a day is the best way to cool your fire down and help you feel grounded.
With a strong drive – and desire to win – you’ll probably like challenging, competitive sports such as skiing, tennis and mountain climbing.
Hot blooded you’ll like living in hot climates, even though you are better in places that are nice and cool. This can also be problematic as you easily overheat.
Sounds like you? Next week we’ll be looking more closely at kapha body type.
