Like the gut, the mouth also has a delicate balance of good and bad bacteria and conventional mouthwashes tend to be alcohol based which do little more than wipe out all bacteria, upsetting the delicate balance of bacteria in the mouth and body.

So this post is for those that love a good mouthwash, but care too much about their health to use chemical products on the market, as well as anyone interested in trying something new that will help stave off disease

What is oil pulling?

When you wake in the morning, on an empty stomach, put one tablespoon of high quality, edible oil in your mouth – either organic black sesame oil or organic coconut oil tends to work best – and swish it around in your mouth for 20 minutes. While swishing make sure to move the oil in front of, behind and through the teeth. After the 20 minutes is up the oil will become thin and whitish in colour. Then spit it in the compost, garden or toilet.

At first 20 minutes might sound like quite a long time, so you might want to try something else while rinsing – maybe take a shower, get your breakfast ready or walk the dog.

The timing is critical though, if you do it for less than 20 minutes you will not be able to pull the toxins out effectively. It can also be a problem if you do it for more than 20 minutes, as there’s a chance you might re-absorb the toxins back into your stomach and mouth.

What are the benefits of oil pulling?

During your waking hours, your mouth is the area through which maximum harmful bacteria can enter your body. This can result in many diseases, so cleaning or pulling out of toxins, or these bacteria is critical.

The benefits of oil pulling range from whitening teeth, healthy gums and preventing bad breath, to increasing energy, decreasing inflammation and alleviating liver, skin and stomach problems. It also helps with clearing the head and neck channels, clearing the foggy head and removing sinus and mucus block in the head and neck region.

Here are seven reasons why oil pulling should be part of your morning routine:

  1. You can get rid of your bad breath by oil pulling and it removes the Streptococcus mutans bacteria which is the main reason for tooth decay.
  2. It reduces the presence of plaques which is important for healthy teeth and gums. Even the gingivitis and periodontitis disease can be cured.
  3. It reduces the dental cavities.
  4. It helps in whitening of the teeth. The oil contains natural antibiotic and antiviral properties which clean your teeth and keeps then whitish.
  5. It stimulates the lymphatic system and removes the toxins from the vital organs.
  6. It helps to get clearer skin as blood becomes cleaner without any toxic and waste content. By oil pulling, even rashes and scars are reduced.
  7. Digestion is improved, and many stomach and digestive problems are solved. Which clears the head and neck of mucus and sinus build up. This make you think clearly.

If you needed another reason to try?

Oil pulling also detoxes and cleanses the whole body in that the mouth is the main entry point for bacteria.

The first step is plaque forming on your teeth, if it sticks around for a long time and then mixes with saliva, a hard crust called tartar forms. It’s hard to get rid of tartar from brushing alone and the bacteria in plaque is harmful, creating pockets between the teeth and gums. These pockets are a thriving home for bacteria and the can cause gingivitis and periodontitis, when the gums get infected and the pockets are deep. If left, the bacteria will migrate to other parts of the body as food and drink mixes there and then travels down through your body, even entering the blood streams and affecting your entire system.

That’s why it’s critical to kill the bacteria in your mouth and flossing and brushing isn’t enough to do this – so you can see how oil pulling not only maintains good oral health, but it protects the body from disease.
